Weight Shift and CG Estimator

Estimate moment change and center of gravity shift using weight moved, distance moved, and total aircraft weight. This free aviation calculator helps pilots understand loading changes during weight and balance planning.

Estimate CG Shift

Enter the weight moved, the distance it is moved, and the total aircraft weight to estimate moment change and center of gravity shift.

Important: This estimator is a training and planning aid only. Always use approved aircraft weight and balance data, loading procedures, and published CG limits for real-world operations.

Weight Shift and CG Estimator

Enter a positive number for moving aft and a negative number for moving forward.

How It Works

Moment Change:
Weight Shifted × Distance Moved
CG Shift:
Moment Change ÷ Total Aircraft Weight
Direction:
Positive distance = aft shift
Negative distance = forward shift

This calculator estimates only the effect of moving a known weight. It does not replace a full weight and balance calculation.

What Is a Weight Shift and CG Estimator?

A weight shift and CG estimator helps pilots understand how moving baggage, passengers, equipment, or other load items changes the aircraft center of gravity.

It works by calculating the moment change caused by shifting a known weight and then dividing that change by the total aircraft weight to estimate the resulting CG movement.

Why Pilots Use a CG Shift Estimator

Weight Shift and CG FAQ

What does a positive CG shift mean?

In this calculator, a positive shift means the center of gravity moves aft because the weight was moved toward the rear of the aircraft.

What does a negative CG shift mean?

A negative shift means the center of gravity moves forward because the weight was moved toward the front of the aircraft.

Can I use this for any aircraft?

It can be used as a general training aid, but real aircraft loading decisions must always use the approved weight and balance data and limitations for that aircraft.

Does this replace a full W&B form or loading graph?

No. This calculator is not a substitute for approved loading forms, POH or AFM data, or published CG envelopes.
